Exploring the Spiritual Experience

Boston University is delving into the intricate relationship between spirituality and personal experience through a research initiative led by Wesley Wildman, a professor in the School of Theology. Wildman's research, which aims to catalog religious experiences and their effects, has yielded some preliminary findings that suggest men tend to find religious experiences more relaxing than women do. This observation is part of a broader inquiry into how religious beliefs can motivate individuals toward moral improvement, as well as how they can lead to extreme behaviors.

Wildman, who has a background in math and physics, transitioned into the scientific study of religion due to his fascination with the diverse effects that faith can have on individuals. "What I really care about is moral formation," he states, emphasizing the role of religion and spirituality in helping individuals become better versions of themselves—whether as spouses, parents, or community members. However, he also acknowledges the darker side of religious experiences, noting that they can sometimes drive individuals toward extremism.

To further investigate these phenomena, Wildman and his research team have developed a survey platform called ExploringMyReligion.org. This site invites participants from around the world to share their religious or spiritual experiences. Respondents are asked a series of questions designed to gauge the emotional impact of their experiences, including whether they evoked positive or negative feelings, vivid memories, or a sense of the supernatural. Wildman is optimistic about reaching at least 200 participants for this research.

The initiative reflects a growing interest in the intersection of spirituality and science, as researchers seek to understand how these experiences shape human behavior and societal norms. Wildman's work is part of his role as the director of BU's doctoral program in religion and science, as well as his involvement with the Institute for the Bio-Cultural Study of Religion.

While the findings from this research are still in their early stages, they contribute to a broader discourse on the role of spirituality in contemporary life.
